Scottsdale, AZ; February 11, 2005 — Rhino Sports®, Inc., the fastest-growing athletic court manufacturer in the United States, has been chosen to receive a Small Business Success Award on February 23, 2005 from the Arizona Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Network.
The award is given to Arizona entrepreneurs who are creating jobs, generating tax revenue, and living out inspiring success stories.
John Snodgrass, an SBDC counselor with the Maricopa Community Colleges, nominated the Scottsdale-based manufacturer of basketball courts, tennis courts, putting greens, and batting cages for this year’s awards.
"Anyone can write a business plan,"Snodgrass says. "But Rhino president John Shaffer is actually implementing a plan successfully, in spite of obstacles such as unexpected production changes and nuisance lawsuits. With 14 full-time employees, a national network of 40 authorized dealers, and upwards of $5 million in sales, the economic impact of Rhino’s success is substantial."
Snodgrass also points to Rhino's "great corporate culture" as another key to the company’s accomplishments. There’s a cantina on the premises, and Rhino employees regularly participate in go-cart races and dart tournaments. "We make fun, healthy products for residences and recreational facilities," Shaffer says. "It only makes sense that we develop the same kind of camaraderie and good times that we want our customers to enjoy."
Shaffer approached the Maricopa Community Colleges SBDC three years ago when he was working on the business plan for Rhino Sports®. “What on earth am I going to get from a free counselor?" Shaffer remembers thinking. Today, after three years of invaluable services, Shaffer's thoughts are a lot different. “I get great advice for free — and now awards," he says. "That's not a bad deal!"
The Arizona SBDC Network is an innovative partnership between the state’s community college districts and the U.S. Small Business Administration. The program provides no-charge counseling services to entrepreneurs in all industries and in all stages of business development.
Now in its seventh year, the Arizona SBDC Network’s Small Business Success Awards will honor 14 businesses throughout the state. Nearly 500 people are expected to attend this year’s program at the Phoenix Country Club, which will be sponsored by APS and hosted by broadcast personality Cary Pfeffer. |
