Rhino Charges Into Seattle To Give Family The Gift Of Fun

Scottsdale, Arizona — January 15, 2006 — Rhino Sports®, Inc., the fastest-growing athletic court manufacturer in the U.S., donated a backyard basketball court to the Kirkwood family of Port Orchard, Washington as part of their appearance on ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The family was chosen for the show after their home was made unlivable by toxic black mold.
Bob Hemming, Rhino’s National Sales Manager, along with Seattle Rhino dealer Manny Ramos and his crew, pitched in with other Extreme Makeover design professionals and volunteer contractors. The Rhino team gave the family a 35’ x 35’ basketball court and hoops, decked out in Seattle Sonics colors.
“The wildest part was working like mad to get everything done in time”, says Hemming. “A project like this usually takes about six weeks, but we got it all done in a week.”
Although the teamwork and camaraderie was inspiring, even more so was the end result. “It was so rewarding to share the gift of sports, good health, and fun with such a deserving family,” says Hemming. “You should’ve seen the look on those kids’ faces.”
“I met with the family and they kept thanking me over and over,” concurs Ramos. “It was extremely gratifying.”
Michael and Dawne Kirkwood have four daughters and one son: Burgandy (18), Michael Jr. (14), Jael (11), Zion (6), and Praize (4).
Ever since providing a basketball court for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix, the people at Rhino Sports have been bitten by the makeover bug. “We made a huge difference in the lives of the kids in Phoenix,” said Hemming, “So when we had a chance to participate in Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, we jumped at it.”
